Fight against Diabetes
The most effective way to fight diabetes in Gujarat is by empowering Indian pharmacy students to get involved in their communities. We will have information sessions that will focus on the important role the pharmacist plays in the well-being of the community. We will also show the importance of health fairs and preventative medicine in Southern California and present practical ways the students can implement such events in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
The city of Ahmedabad, Gujarat is a "circular" city. The approach we would like to take in training and educating students is by doing it in a geographically divided manner. Information sessions will be held according to pre-plotted geographic regions (i.e. North, South, East, West). These trained students will be screening and participating in health fairs in their local areas. The expected duration of the information sessions for the whole trip will be five days.
The first day would be utilized for us to get accustomed to the area and have a chance to meet with our regional project manager and local collaborating physicians. This first day would also be used to plan for the upcoming information sessions and to gather resources such as transportation, banners, etc.
Days two to five will include all of the information sessions. On each day, we will be targeting one of the four different regions. The information sessions will include both didactic and experiential learning opportunities where the students will learn about diabetes, its prevalence in India, symptoms, modifiable risk factors, counseling tips, and the process and flow of screening at health fairs. We will also be emphasizing on the importance of preventative medicine. At the end of each information session we will also inform the students about different ways to approach preventative care: such as screening for cholesterol, blood pressure, body fat, etc.
From days six and on, we will be focusing all of our attention on organizing health fairs at various locations in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Through the help of our project manager, we have already solidified multiple locations such as: bus stops, gymnasiums, and temples. We are still in the process of finding more locations where we can organize screening events.
